I’ve been to India 8 times in first 40+ years of life and 8 times in last 3 years now that I have a job that requires frequent travel to India.      In all of those trips and now reinforced more than ever, it is the sound of India which is most embedded in my mind whether the 1980’s in Mumbai or 2016 in Hyderabad (picture from below – December 2016).

Every day on my commute to work, I drive past downtown San Francisco, onto the Bay Bridge, and into the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area.   Along with the beauty of the San Francisco skyline, the glistening water, the contrast of the old and new Bay Bridge, a must see part of this drive is the shipping cranes of Oakland.  I’ve become fascinated with the large cargo ships, the imposing cranes, the aluminum containers that neatly move from ship to truck, and the unexpected innovation and clockwork efficiency of the global and vast shipping and trucking transportation industry.

To get a closer look, I ventured to  the Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, right smack in the middle of the Port of Oakland.   The park has a viewing center to see an operating crane and you can see close up the stacked crates at the port.   Here are some photos from my afternoon at the park (more…)

The America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in sports, dating back to 1851.   It pits the worlds best yachting teams with state of the art catamaran boats.  This year, the America’s Cup finals are being held in my backyard, being held in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area from September 7 to September 21.

I was fortunate enough to spend a day on the bay and experience the America’s cup as a spectator with the best seat in the house.     (more…)

A few years back, I made a weekend trip with employees from my company’s India office to Thailand as a reward for meeting company goals.   We went to the resort town of Hua Hin for two days and nights and spent the following day in Bangkok.

This post is way over due, but it was most certainly an enjoyable trip.  Following are pictures and observations from a fun filled Thai weekend. (more…)

This weekend I made it to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in beautiful Monterey, California.   Having living in the San Francisco Bay Area for the last 13 years, I would have thought I would have made it there, but life I suppose has conspired against me.   Regardless, I finally made it and thoroughly enjoyed the majesty of the sea life housed in the aquarium.   Penguins, sharks, fish, jellyfish, seahorses, colorful fish, dull fish, birds, squid, turtles, eel, worms, camouflaged animals, bright animals- the aquarium has it all.   Overall though, I’d have to say the jellyfish stole the show! This week, I found myself in New York city, traveling to my company’s Mid-town Manhattan office near Times Square.  Of course, this was just one week after the devastating Hurricane Sandy which tragically took lives and disrupted the lives of millions in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut along with other states up and down the Atlantic coast.  And of course, outside of the US, the damage and devastation in Caribbean countries was equally dramatic.    Of course, the cover photo from New York Magazine captured the reality of the city’s power distribution very powerfully. Recently, I made a trip to Europe and had business meetings in a small town outside of Cologne, Germany called Euskirchen.    Arriving on a Sunday afternoon for all day meetings on Monday and Tuesday, I had a few hours where I could stroll through the city center and observe the city sites and local residents.    I was fortunate enough to stumble into a community concert/show, where children were singing and dancing a variety of songs.    A fortunate chance to see a slice of the local culture.   This was my favorite one. One of my first attempts at writing was a post titled the Power of the Head Wiggle after I returned from a trip to India in early 2009.  I first posted it as a note on Facebook and received favorable feedback from my friends and contacts.   After I started my blog, I soon re-posted the write-up on this blog.  It has by far been the most popular post I’ve made.  Most noticeably, it had been cited as a reference on Wikipedia under the term Head Bobble.   It has also been cited in other people’s blog post such as Mind Your Decisions.

This week, I shared my story of the Indian Head Wiggle on the Canadian Broadcast Center (the Canadian equivalent of NPR) program Definitely not the Opera (a program like NPR’s program This American Life).   (more…)

A couple of weeks ago, I made it up to the great Pacific Northwest for a quick weekend summer trip, coinciding with perfect summer Portland weather.  Ten years ago, I lived in Portland for a year and after I moved to California,  I often traveled to the suburbs of Portland for business reasons.  Having the experience of actually living there, I had overlooked what a great tourist destination site Portland is.  It offers a clean, uncrowded  urban experience, the ability to immerse yourself in legendary floral, forest, and garden environments, and the opportunity to enjoy some of the most aesthetically beautiful waterfalls, stream and river scenes, and mountain views. I just returned from a trip to New York City and had an opportunity to make it to Central Park for the second time in 3 months.   These visits to Central Park reminded me how much I enjoy urban parks- they add real character to the great urban centers of the world.   This has inspired a list—my favorite urban parks that I’ve been to and the reasons why…..

1. Hyde Park- London, England (more…)
